A word from our judge:

I was honored to be this year’s judge for Atlanta Celebrates Photography’s Open Exhibition. I found it super interesting to view work from a broad range of artists, especially with ages ranging from under 13 to over 60. The submitted work covered diverse subjects including our natural world, created portraits, and found moments. I wish I could hear the photographers’ motivations and techniques - but I also found it fascinating to view photography as an equalizer. A take-away for me was how the students’ submissions, no doubt from an instructor’s assignment, could surpass fulfilling the goal and stand on their own as great photographs. A big compliment to the instructors. My selection for Critic’s Choice stood out for its energy, subtle emotionalism, and rule-breaking - whether by accident or intentionally. Some of the artists’ work didn’t adhere to historic photographic norms but stood out for their creativity. I commend all of the photographers who created great work and shared it for the world to see.
